Two of today’s most-popular crossover SUVs are the BMW X5 and the Lexus RX. Motorists have preferences that make them like one model over the other. But which car is the best of the two?
I won’t lie to you; it isn’t always easy to do car comparisons such as this one. Everyone has their unique needs out of a car, and some people are loyal to specific brands.

In this blog post, you will learn whether the Lexus RX is a better car than the BMW X5.
Price: Lexus RX
When it comes down to the cold, hard facts, the Lexus RX is cheaper to buy than the BMW X5. In North America, you can buy the Lexus RX for $47.445. Whereas the BMW X5 starts from $55,100.
Savvy motorists will calculate their total cost of ownership rather than the buying price alone. But with a lower buying price, the Lexus RX will make the case for a lower total cost of ownership than its German rival.
There is also the fact that the Lexus RX is a hybrid car. It features a 3.5-litre V6 engine that works in tandem with an electric powertrain. The basic BMW X5 has a 3.0-litre twin-turbodiesel engine and is not hybrid.
Fuel economy: Tie
The Lexus RX has a combined fuel economy of 44.8 miles per gallon. The BMW X5’s 3.0d is 45.6 miles per gallon. In other words, the X5 is better by 0.8 miles per gallon!
Although that looks good on paper, there is one caveat, according to Inchcape Lexus.
In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, diesel is more expensive than petrol. In those countries, it would make sense to buy the Lexus RX because the fuel consumption costs per annum will be lower.
Even if petrol and diesel prices are the same, the RX will still use less fuel because it’s a hybrid petrol-electric vehicle.
Styling: Lexus RX
BMW adopts a somewhat cautious approach when it comes to model styling. Many motoring aficionados have commented that the German car maker’s models always look bland.
Lexus take a different approach. They are happy to think “out of the box” when it comes to model styling. The Lexus RX is curvy, fresh and will always catch people’s attention wherever it goes!
Badge appeal: BMW
One thing that BMW has in its favour is that it has been around for many generations. Lexus has only been on the scene since 1989.
Business users will often go for the X5 because of its prestigious badge. Lexus is by no means an inferior brand; after all, its parent company is Toyota.
Lexus is making headway in the luxury and executive car markets. Most of its models are well-praised by motoring groups around the world. And because price plays a major factor, it will make a lot of hardened BMW fans think twice about their next car buy.
